Proposing Novel Robust (P-ω-δ) PSS in Coordination with TCSC Controller to Damp Electromechanical Oscillations in Multi-machine Power System

Present paper proposes maiden robust coordinated design of multi-channel (P-ω-δ) power system stabilizer (MPSS) and thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) based power oscillation damping (POD) controller to enhance power system dynamic stability. Introducing advanced (P-ω-δ) PSS, for the first time, in coordination with the POD controller can provide more capable structure in damping of electromechanical (EM) oscillations than the conventional CPSSTCSC controller. The robust coordinated design is formulated as an optimization problem in which the controller parameters are optimized concurrently via PSO algorithm by minimizing integral of time squared error (ITSE) performance index in which some loading conditions are regarded to guarantee robust design. Time domain simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment examined on 2-area 4-machine (2A4M) power system over different disturbances and loading conditions demonstrate that outstanding improvement in damping of EM oscillations is achieved by employing proposed (P-ω-δ) PSS-POD controller in comparison with the CPSS-POD.
